04 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

06 - Blue gel food coloring

# How-To Steps:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions: approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in a few drops of red gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. Press evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in a few drops of blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They look so impressive that people always assume you spent hours in the kitchen, when really you're done in under an hour of actual work.
  • The three-layer trick lets you play with flavor too—vanilla in the white, a hint of almond or coconut extract for depth—without losing the visual magic.
  • Kids can help press down the layers, making this a genuinely fun kitchen project rather than something you're rushing through alone.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential—I learned this the hard way when liquid coloring turned my white layer into a damp, sliding mess that wouldn't hold its shape.
  • That one-hour cooling time isn't negotiable; cutting into them too early means watching your beautiful layers crumble into confused little chunks instead of neat, distinct squares.
  • The parchment paper isn't just for convenience—it's the difference between lifting out a perfect, intact slab and scraping marshmallow residue off the bottom of your pan for twenty minutes.
03 -
  • Use a bench scraper or a metal spatula dipped in water to press each layer down evenly—it's more effective than your hands and keeps you from getting marshmallow stuck under your fingernails.
  • If you add sprinkles and they don't stick, the treats are too cool; reheat them for thirty seconds in a 200-degree oven and try again while they're still slightly warm.
